It is interesting to think of something such as bar and counter stools as a focal point, why not? With the wide variety of stools available now, the possibilities can be fabulous. In one of my previous articles, I made brief mention of using them as a focal point. Let me now take that one step farther, by suggesting starting your new decorating project right there!
Those of us, who just itch to make changes in our surroundings, can take something such as a new fabulous bar stool set, and use that as inspiration, and run with it! Start with a specific theme, color scheme, and design that you love, and select just the set that gets your designer juices flowing. From there, think about carrying that same theme, color scheme, and design throughout. Especially in an area of your home that is open and connected, such as kitchen, dining, and family room combination areas.
If for instance, you have a passion for the ocean, you could start with an ocean theme patterned fabric on your stools. There are many great fabrics available on the market now which is meant for outdoor use, but that you can utilize indoors as well. That is just one example, there are many options available.
In the connecting family room, tackle the sofa (one of the main pieces of furniture in that area). What about selecting one of the colors from the fabric you used on the stools, and use it as the main color on your sofa. It would then be interesting to use the same theme fabric on throw pillows. These would be simple to change out if you later decide to try something new.
If you would rather not use theme fabrics here, another idea is to use color- on- color. Utilize some of the colors from your stool fabric, and create a color collage there that ties in with your theme fabric, by using the same or complimentary hues. Mix and match here for an interesting effect. One tip also, it would be advisable for you to think of using your theme fabrics, on smaller items that would be less expensive to change later, if you choose to do so.
It is my personal opinion, that if you decide to create a theme, more is not necessarily better. In fact, using theme items in excess would create too much of a busy effect. Thus, keep them to a minimum, and use color a bit more. Another thought, when embellishing these rooms with items that tie into the theme, instead of placing a plethora of small items all about, think about a perfect picture over the mantel that is just a simple compliment. Maybe add a larger throw rug also, in front of the sofa or fireplace. Remember to keep it simple. Tie it in, but do not overdo it. After all, the idea is to showcase those perfect stools, not overwhelm them. Make them stand out and say, “Come, let us sit, relax, and enjoy each others company.”
